Starvation - End 2 Beginning

I teamed up with US group; Starvation to host their mixtape "End 2 Beginning". What came out is a first of its kind monster, we put a feature with Rapper-of-the-moment; Reason on a track called Reason 2 Starve. Here is a short interview with the Starvation and its founder Ojizz The mixtape drops on the 25th November.

Blog: Y'all only officially became Starvation in 2010 but your sound is that of the "Golden Era/boom bap" age, how is that so at a time when being flashy is the style of the day?

Starvation: In actuality, we formed StarVation in 2012. The co-founder and A&R Jerbrel Graves (Brelly G) came up with the name Starvation to demonstrate the hunger that we have for the game and to leave all our listeners wanting more! We've noticed that TODAYs hip hop scene lacks substance. It's a select few that actually show real lyricism. So with that knowledge, we wanted to bring that Old School flava back to let everyone know that hip-hop isn't dead, it's very much alive!

Blog: Talk to me about E2B and the African connect.

Starvation:  Well this project is something very special. Our producer Ojizz composed this whole mix tape within one week. His whole vision was to incorporate the old with the new. Merging old-school hip-hop with the new culture of Dub step. It's hosted by one of the best DJs in Africa DJ C-Live .This just shows that hip-hop lives within any culture worldwide.

Blog: You recently opened for Kendrick Lamar at the University of Delaware and performed to a 5000 strong crowd, how did that go down?

Starvation: Opening up for Kendrick Lamar was an amazing experience. You would have thought that we would be nervous but that wasn't the case at all. It was one of the biggest steps in our career. That experience is actually documented on YouTube. We were actually in awe when we saw how the crowd reacted to us especially the females! What can we say they love us "Lol."Kendrick was a very humble and cool guy. We were just happy and blessed that we were able to experience this within our lives. And there's much more to come!

Blog: XXL Mag put you in the top 10 rappers you need to know.

Starvation: Little did we know that that would be a blessing in disguise! It raised so much controversy in Baltimore. We could definitely say we were hated on but actually the love outweighed the hate. We didn't understand because so many people overlook that but it's actually a very big deal. XXL isn't just any little magazine or website, it's huge so why wouldn't people be happy. Hey I guess it comes with the territory.

Blog:
You recently collaborated with the legend Tracey Lee, how did that come about?

Starvation: You said it right the legend Tracey Lee. That was another blessing where we had the chance to sit down with Tracey and came up with a concept for the record. Of course it would demonstrate the old-school fused with the new school bridging the gap! We have a saying, if you want to be legendary you have to work with legends and pay homage to them, so this was the best way that we knew how! Anyone that has worked with the late Biggie Smalls aka Notorious BIG is definitely a legend in our book!

Blog: From the collabo we did with Xtatic from Kenya to the SA connection; your footprints can be found throughout Africa, what is your ultimate goal, why Africa?

Starvation: We wanted to do something different! Everyone is so focused on making it in the United States, but in all actuality if you can make it in Africa or any place abroad you can make it anywhere! Africa has the deepest appreciation for hip-hop. Authentic hip-hop that is! We can't wait to come over there and shut it down!

Blog: Can you take us through your beat making process, how do you get into the zone when making a beat?

Ojizz: I've always made music according to feeling. Some people say that I have two sides. When I'm not in the studio, I’m just a regular laid-back guy but when I'm in my zone it’s nothing like it. I turn into a different person! I've always loved the art of sampling. Jazz is my favorite genre of music, so a lot of my music has jazz influence within it.

Blog:
How did It’z Alive Ent come about?

Ojizz: It was purely taking a stand for what I wanted to do with the rest of my life! I wanted to do music my own way. I've been cheated in the past with being in a production groups but I said no more. And I can admit I was young and dumb at the time and didn't know much about the business. I took it upon myself to learn as much as I can and conquer it! Now I'm running a successful indie record label that consists of seven R&B and rap artists. I couldn't do it without my management team Broadview Corporation and my label co-founder and A&R Jerbrel Graves.

Blog:
Being responsible for the creation of Starvation and its overall sound, how much pressure is put on you to deliver?

Ojizz:
It's not pressure when you're doing something that you love to do. It's not a lot of people that can actually say that. Nothing is perfect and things can get a little rough but we stay strong and I make sure that I'm able to provide the best for my artist. They need me just as much as I need them. So with knowing that, we stay organized and we work as one.

Blog: Future plans for Starvation? That's like asking the sun is it going to rise today! We are going to continue to bring that raw dope fresh hip-hop flavor back to the new school. We're coming for the world!

Uber - Everyones private driver

A new car service has been launched in South Africa, Uber lets their clients ride in style and class. This service operates from an App on Android and iPhones, you simply click on the closes car to you in the App and uber will track the car for you on your phone screen turn by turn til it gets to you. The cars you get chauffeured in are Merc's C, E, or S Class, BMW 3, 5 or the  750i and Audi A6. All you do is simply download the App and register your details (incl credit card) and payment is automatically deducted and you are sent an emali reciept of your transaction. NO NEED TO TIP.

Apparently this service is not much higher than current cab fees in South Africa. During a demo trip I ordered a car in Paris (they have a presence there too) and saw it turn to come to my destination but I immediately cancelled it. :-)
